THe 1970s SHED was for real. It was full of real Thistle fans. Not the shallow fake imposters of today. Check out the attendances back then, too, compared to the mickey mouse numbers today.

And there was no five-year plan by the manager just inviting trouble. Partick Thistle doesn't have a plan. It never did and it never will. That's part of the eccentric madness of it all.

An excellent point well made. I blame The Arch.

The five year plan hit a stumbling block when we got promoted. We've very nearly taken 9 points off your club. Reminds me of Raith in McGlynn's 2nd season: we could beat anyone on our day but regularly lost to teams who would play defensive football.

If you closely examine that photograph The Arch uses, you'll recognise that smug expression concealed around the mouth. Whether or not it's actually him is irrelevant, it epitomises the kind of sickening smarm which does not lend itself to being a Thistle fan. Flush it out.

Spot on mate. The attendances aspect really puzzle me because I have fond memories of the die hard fans.
I was part of the coaching staff during four spells under John Lambie. When we won the Second Division title I remember a visit to Hampden Park to play Queens Park and the game being held up for 15 minutes to let the crowd in..over 4000. Danny Lennon scored the only goal of the game, and that was a crucial result that season.

I wish Mr Lambie(Gaffer) could return and spread his magic dust yet again. Celebrating promotion at Forfar, and
another title at Stirling Albion.:)

Great times, fantastic supporters.Have only been back once in recent years after winning promotion under Campbell and Bone.:(

Can't really comment on the atmosphere, since it was before my time. There are all sorts of underlying factors which impact on attendances though (football is more expensive than it was back then, going up and/or down the divisions will always impact attendances to a degree etc. etc.)

I would say that if/when we're next back in the SPL, whether that's under McCall or whoever, then the change in atmosphere at Firhill will be remarkable, however.

I can actually kind of agree with this; while it would be ideal to be able to make reliable long-term plans for the future, football is such an unpredictable game that its virtually impossible to say where a lot of clubs will be in even 4 or 5 season's time.

Saying that, short-termism and overspending can lead to hideous amounts of debt (see the recent thread on here regarding Dunfermline's finances for an example of this, or Livingston's collapse down to the 3rd) so its important to strike a balance between what we do this season but also try to do things to improve our future as well, even if such schemes will take a long time to bear fruit. The "kids go free" scheme at least shows that we're trying, though it will be a fair amount of time yet till we see whether that's had a positive impact or not.

There'll be a toy flying out the pram, next. Take a close look at that expression around the mouth in his picture. Whether it's actually him or not doesn't matter. The epitomy of smugness in all its, well, smugness.Posted Image

Have to agree with much of this. When I was at Uni back in the 70's my Thistle supporting mate and I would alternate between Thistle and Queens games depending on who had the most interesting game, who was playing nearest , etc. Saw some cracking games at Firhill, cup tie against Hibs stands out, but many others. The shed was really rocking. Don't know where all those Thistle fans have gone. Another highlight was of course being an adopted Jag for the day at the 4-1 Lg Cup win over Celtic. Thistle were a pretty big club in those days. Still a very friendly bunch and the pies in hospitality are magic.

Smallers clubs, geographically, will have to merge at some stage in future. 10 or 20 years from now but it's inevitable. The sooner the process gets going, the better. People just have purge their contempt and get used to the idea it's the only way to save and improve the professional game, long-term, in Scotland.

Here's the basis for a new merged 12-club league with new clubs, all with new names, playing at the biggest capacity ground or, in some cases, a new ground built at a central location.

As there will be longer journeys for some fans to games, an integrated national suppporters' bus company has to be set up in towns where clubs no longer exist. It can be funded, initially, by sale of their grounds.

Hearts/Hibs ... both Dundees/St Johnstone ... Kilmarnock/St Mirren/Ayr/Morton/Stranraer ... Falkirk/East Stirling/Alloa/Stirling Albion/Livingston/Stenhousemuir ... Dunfermline/Cowdenbeath/Raith Rovers/Forfar/East Fife/Brechin/Montrose/Arbroath ... Motherwell/Albion Rovers/Hamilton/Airdrie ... QoS/Annan/Berwick ... Thistle/Clyde/Dumbarton ... Aberdeen/Peterhead ... Ross County/Inverness/Elgin and lastly Rangers/Celtic in about 200 years. Queen's Park remain.

Love your video of the diving defender mimmicking the diving attacker. Who was playing who? What was the name of the player who mimmicked the dive?

Um no, only financially mismanaged clubs nursing white elephant grounds will need to merge in the next 20 years. So that's Thistle and Clyde taken care of, while the rest of us well-run clubs carry on as we were. :)

Huv ye nae imagination? It's the only way forward for Scottish football in future.

Count all those three figure crowds in the 2nd and 3rd division and add them to major clubs average crowd in two new divisions.

Less struggling clubs going nowhere, bigger crowds, more gate money and better football (hopefully).

Only self-serving vested interest, greed and resentment will slow the inevitable processs down. Get a grip. Posted Image
