What a night! Montrose did really well, but we've played better and lost this season. I still can't get over how awful Forfar are.
They started well enough, winning endless corners and having the netter of the opening exchanges. However, a dreadful blunder from Brown cost them the first goal. The keeper inexplicably left a ball played across his six yard box, and Sinclair stooped to head home.
Hegarty was sent off, as others have said, for trying to take a free kick quickly. That referee was the worst I've seen in a long, long time. I hope the club appeal the red card, as it was a rank injustice.
Shortly after, just before half time, Gemmell, who was full of running and commitment, notched the second with a calm finish from a difficult angle.
With Hegarty dismissed, we were obliged to play the second half like a team defending a half time lead away from home, hitting on the break. We did well as Forfar pumped endless high balls ijnto the box. McNeil was magnificent, dealing very well with everything in the air and producing tow fine sprawling saves from free kicks- one in each half.
Milligan;s lob for the third was brilliantly executed, and Gemmell produced another excellent finish from another difficult position to round off the win.
All in all, Fester's Red Hand Commandos were thoroughly decommissioned and put beyond use. For all the money he's had, and for all the solid and talented players he's been allowed to sign, his team really are awful- no better than the bunch Moffat and Willie Garner had. Moffat had no money and a poor, thin squad, but at least his team played with a little bit of heart (remembering that 4-3 win at Castle Greyskull, for example, when they came back from 3-1 down).
So, to conclude, an excellent victory for Montrose- and Forfar are really, really dreadful. There's no way that team's making the play-offs.
