Newcastle are the bigger club undoubtedly but Nottingham Forest are historically more successful.

There is a distinct difference in my opinion between a "big" club and a successful club.

The lower end of the premiership is stuffed with shite like Wigan and Hull who are by no means big clubs but are moderately successful in being in the top flight.
On the other hand genuinely "big" clubs like Southampton, Leeds etc with fan bases and stadia better than many of the Wigans and Hulls of the world are floundering in the lower leagues due to well documented financial mismanagement and various other factors.

Very true. Except possibly for the suggestion that Southampton is a "big" club. Southampton are very much a middle order club. I'm not even certain Southampton would necessarily feature in a top 20 Premiership of "big clubs". Forest, Newcastle & Leeds all would though.

Our Livingston friend appears to be having a problem distinguishing between "big" and "successful". It isn't the same thing.

True, although Nottingham Forest are a big club. If you are talking in terms of success and history, then it's Forest. If you are talking in terms of fan base and finances then it is Newcastle.

What would people go for as a premiership of the 20 "biggest" clubs then? Based on fan base, history, etc

I would have:

1- Man United
2- Liverpool
3- Arsenal
4- Chelsea
5- Aston Villa
6- Man City
7- Tottenham
8- Everton
9- Newcastle
10- Sunderland
11- West Ham
12- Derby County
13- Sheffield Utd
14- Nottingham Forest
15- Norwich City
16- Sheffield Wednesday
17- Leeds United
18- Middlesbrough
19-Stoke City
20- Blackburn Rovers
We're on an express elevator to hell. . . . . .going down!!!!

If you were even 1% smart you would see that from my post i think Chelsea are a bigger club.

Hence the vale of leven post from another member which flew over your tinny little unionistic head.

Neither Aberdeen or Dundee United have won 2 European Cups you complete spastic. You make comparisons like a right twat.

"If you know your history..." :whistle

Forest are bigger.

I tend to think history and tradition are an integral part in what makes a club. Forest have that much more than Newcastle.

Is this even close? Newcastle on their day have the resources to comfortable compete in the top end of the Premiership and push the top 4. Forest's resources stretch to no more than a few a seasons in the Premiership and back to being a yo-yo club.

I'd go:-

Manchester United
Arsenal
Chelsea
Liverpool
Newcastle
Aston Villa
Everton
Tottenham
Blackburn
Leeds
Man City
West Ham
Bolton
Middlesborough
Portsmouth
Wigan
Southampton
Sunderland
Birmingham
Ipswich
West Brom

The bottom was very difficult, as it will be mostly teams who are promoted and relegated regularly.

Myself and a group of friends where having an arguement the other day over who is a bigger team, in general terms, Nottingham Forest or Newcastle. After I told these ignorant arseholes about the history of Nottingham Forest they thought twice and 5 out of the 10 of us agreed that Nottingham Forest were a bigger team. Of course, the people who I had this discussion with are complete idiots and a few months back accused me of being "sad" as I knew who the great Billy Bremner was and told them of how he is both a legend to Scottish football and Leeds United.

Nottingham Forest have won 2 European cups, once champions of England, 4 league cups and 2 FA cups. They get gates of around 26,000, although come from a city with 2 teams in the football league.
Newcastle have won 6 FA cups. However, get gates of around 45,000.

As both teams are on course to be promoted to the premier league, who do you think, overall, is a bigger club?

Easily sorted this one - in terms of success on the pitch in relative size to fan base, Nottingham Forest are the bigger club

When it comes to financial clout, average home attendance & actual fan base - Newcastle UNited!

No way should Liverpool be below Chelsea!!! or evn Arsenal for that matter...

Also Newcastle below Man City despite City having a far better history?

I hate to say it as I really like Ipswich, but Norwich are the bigger club.
ECR leader Jan Zahradil has attacked the decision to go ahead with the House of History project. Speaking in Strasbourg, the Czech member said, "We do not need this. As Europe is losing competitiveness and geopolitical weight, it is becoming a museum anyway."

to be quite honest, since they last won one more than fifty years ago,not really.
newcastle are a big team in the eyes of their supporters and they get big gates but surely some sort of achievement in the recent past is necessary. In this NUFC are not a big team and i dont see that changing in the next half century either

Let's have it right here Wigan should not be near this. They are bankrolled by Whelan and if they weren't they would be a league one outfit playing in front of 6K every second week.

If that's meant to be in some sort of order then I wouldn't necessarily agree with it but as a list of the biggest 20 it's not a million miles away.

I probably wouldn't have Norwich City or Stoke City in there. Wolves are a bigger club than either of those. So are West Bromwich Albion. Southampton would have a shout at being included ahead of Sheffield United too.

Newcastle United been League Champions 4 times, and have also won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup to go along with their 6 FA Cups.

Granted they haven't won anything of significance for 40 years, leaving aside the Inter Toto Cup (is there actually a trophy for that?), but Nottingham Forest haven't won anything lately either.

And Newcastle have never been in the third tier of English football, unlike Forest, who have been there on more than 1 occasion.

So in my opinion, and this can only be about opinions, Newcastle United are the bigger team.

And does it really matter, except, perhaps, to the supporters of Newcastle or Forest?

Anyone who has listed Chelsea in the top five of English clubs based on stature, fanbase etc has obviously only started watching fitba in the last 10 years.

Chealse are an utter diddy club who would be languishing in the bottom half of the EPL on gates of 25000 or less had they not been bankrolled for the best part of a decade.

My pop at the top twenty would be:

Man Utd
Liverpool
Arsenal
Tottenham
Everton
Newcastle
Aston Villa
Leeds
Man City
West Ham
Chelsea
Sunderland
Wolves
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield United
Norwich
Crystal Palace
Southampton
Ipswich Town
Middlesbrough

Theere's probably a bit of bias towards the 80s and early 90s to this, but you could argue the bottom eight or nine pleces until the cows come home.

Sorry, i misread it as a top 20 in the premiership history, so :-

Liverpool are bottom of the top 4 as they have never won the title.
Newcastle ahead of Man City as they were challenging at the top for the longest time
Ipswich have a decent finish in the premiership before
Wigan have been in the premiership for quite a while, and done quite well in it when they have been.

Looking at it, i also missed out Fulham from there, which in a top 20 in premiership history, they would be there too.
