Dear Everyone,

STOP THE PRESS;

I have taken it upon myself to launch the 2010 Pie & Bovril Fantasy Baseball League. It promises to be the most exciting ever. The facts you need are;

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball
Name; Pie & Bovril Baseball Bonanza
Code; 243720
Password; DerekAdamsIsCool
Draft date (Provisional) 9pm GMT Sunday, March 21st. Please let me know when would suit and I'll change it to the most popular.

Please sign up, all the categories and squad sizes are provisional. I'll probably get rid of the bench spots, if nobody minds, for starters.

Yours,
JP

Update; changed the date to the Sunday. Seems more reasonable. Wouldn't want anyone to miss out on some Friday boozing, would we?:lol:

Bumpity bump. Only five members. If uptake remains low, I'll add some extra roster places to make things a bit more interesting.

I'll join, that'll be me up to 3, but the more leagues I have, the more time I can kill!

My other league drafts tonight, so if anyone is still up for joining, give us a message, we have places left. Go on, you know you want to.

I'm in... will give my brother a shout as well as he entered last year.

Same scoring system as last year?

Pretty much. I think I included Grand Slams as bonus points but that's about the only difference I think.

Not unless everyone wants it to be. Trying to keep it as simple as possible.

Great. I'll send you a PM. It's mainly a case of making sure none of your players are injured.

How did you get on? My pitching line up is retarded - Tim Lincecum, Cliff Lee, Johann Santana, Clayton Kershaw , Cole Hamels, Mariano Rivera and Joe Nathan.

Aw come on, it's got to be one of the cateogeries, it's pretty much proven as THE most important stat when it comes to hitting. Average shouldn't be there ahead of On Base Percentage really.

Rubbish.

To prove how rubbish:-

Player A - whom i shall not name due possibly embarrassing him:-

Avg : OBP : Slg

.145 .330 .171

.330 isn't great - but it is a passable OBP.

His Avg and Slugging showed how bad he was last year.

Have you read Moneyball? If not, I highly recommend it, as it illustrates my point far clearly than I am capable in a messageboard post.

However, I'll take the time to point out that while you say that his slugging and his average prove that he has had a terrible season, you ignore that his ability to take walks - a completely underrated attribute - has allowed him to end the season with, as you have put it, a passable OBP. If he gets on base a third of the time, it doesn't matter how he does it - he's getting on base, and that's how you score runs in baseball.

So, 10 players in so far, hopefully everyone stays active, and can make the draft.

As for OBP being the most important stat in baseball, it is important but no 1 stat is the "most important". You really have to look at them all to interpret how good a player is, and depending on what role they have in the team, the "acceptable" numbers are all different. In Fantasy baseball however, it isn't an important stat at all.

Mince, if it's in there, it is an important stat, of course it is. And seeing as it's the best way of telling how efficient a player his, it should be in any fantasy league.

I have never ever heard of a batter being "efficient"

Ahh, so you don't understand what it means then. A baseball player is only any good if he can hit a ball a long way!

A tip for all those yet to draft. All of us, in other words. Brandon Webb is "likely to start the year on the DL". Given he missed the entire season (<_<) last year, I wonder if anyone will draft him this year?

He will be an interesting one. With players coming back from a long injury layoff, they are often low down in the Yahoo Rankings, so aren't autodrafted - and people tend to forget about them when they are drafting. I managed to get Chris Carpenter last year in my last 3-4 picks for both leagues i was in - and you could argue he went on to what should have been a Cy Young year.

I haven't heard anything about Webb thus far to know if he is going to miss significant time, or just a few weeks. With DL spots available, im sure someone will pick him up though (i.e. me)

So mr JP - what will you give me to NOT draft Lincecum?

It's a fair risk, but I'm not going to pick him early.

As for Lincecum, how about I pick a shortstop who will miss the entire year, and a pitcher who does likewise, and you give me Lincecum plus a 20 home run player of your choice? Sound reasonable? :P
