David Cowan would get a game for any team in the first division.

He is an outstanding centre half, probably one of the best in the division.

If we get to the SPL then we shall be signing SPL quality defenders (At least that is the plan.). We attempted to sign several SPL quality players in January but to no avail as we are not an SPL club yet.

If we stay in the First Division then Benny, Lauchlan, McKeown and Cowan are good options for us, although I think one addition wouldn't go a miss.

I admit Pavels is a good player but we have better defenders than him at Dens and we don't need him thank you very much.

Not so sure about that myself.

Sounds like Melville has stopped handing out the money if Dundee Utd can sign players that Dundee wanted.

Yes, yes very good- Melville's losing interest. He'd have been dragging us to another administration had we agreed to start paying off greedy agents I'm sure.

"Dundee was the best, it was my second home," Nemsadze said. "I loved it very much. Georgians and Scots both have the same kind of character. They are all very warm people. Scotland will always be my second home. I was there for three-and-a-half years. For me, my best moment was the chip I scored in the derby against Dundee United."
"Lee is now at Dundee United?" an incredulous Nemsadze asked. "Ah ... he is a bad boy. He has crossed the street."

Benedictus isn't ready for regular football at this level, Lauchlan will be another year older, Cowan's had a purple patch, but you're yet to see if he can keep it up and McKeown's yet to prove he can stay fit for any length of time. Your defence will require an overhaul this summer. Promotion, or no promotion.

I don't know.

And yet you can confidently talk about other aspects of Dundee's finances. Sorry, I thought you'd had a good look at the accounts the way you were going on.

I don't need to see the accounts to know that:

1) We received £250,000 from Burnley
2) A crowd of 20,000 at Celtic park = ~£100,000 in revenue
3) A similar net crowd for games at Dens against Aberdeen and Rangers = ~£100,000 in revenue

Right enough. I feel sorry for him. He's being destroyed playing next to those cloggers at Firhill. Such a shame.

Cowan was playing extremely well before his injury IMO.

Cloggers? Right enough. Have you seen Martyn Corrigan play before? He's not called "Der Kaiser" for nothing.

Different years, different accounts. And surely you'd need to have seen the account to speak so confidently about incomings, outgoings, investments and how they've played against each other.

From reports at the time of Griffiths signing:

"Millionaire director Calum Melville, who stumped up for the deal, is delighted to get the player signed."

I'm pretty sure I read something recently where Melville stated it was him who financed the deals. I'll need to have a rake around.

More:

"The Dark Blues may be happy to boast an eye-catching side and impressive performers such as Gary Harkins and Leigh Griffiths, despite a notable blip on Saturday when they lost away to Queen of the South, but it may be argued that their best acquisition this season has been Melville, a 40-year-old multimillionaire whose financial input — the amount of which he will not divulge — facilitated the signing of those players."

Anyway, I suppose I'll have to just go on your supposition, won't I?

Just because Lauchlan has aged by one year doesn't mean he won't be able to cut it. He has only just turned 33 so it is not as if his time is up quite yet. I agree with you regarding Benedictus and if he had been out on loan this season then he may have came back ready to challenge the first team, injuries have prevented that but he is still more than decent back-up. Every time I have seen Cowan at centre half he has been excellent, it is not just this season that he has been deployed there. As for McKeown, I can't say if he will fully recover from this injury or not but if he does then we will have 3 very decent centre halfs for the First Divisionn with one being an excellent prospect if he bulks up slightly.

We won't need an overhaul if we don't go up but we will need to add another centre half as McKeown and Cowan aren't the most reliable when it comes to injuries.

I thought I was going to read about Dundee spunking more money on players in their desperate bid to avoid the death spiral. They're no good at that either. What a bunch of useless diddies.

I suppose it would depend on what Melville would see as success next season, if promotion is attained this. Would he settle for just staying up? Or would he be looking for top 6 status straight away? If it`s the latter, then you`re gonna need a better quality of defender than Jim Lauchlan IMO.

Melvilles aim is for us reach the SPL this season then establish ourselfs as an SPL side before making the step up to becoming a top 6 side. I expect an overhaul in our defence come the start of the season if were going to be playing in the SPL next season.

I agree, obviously. However, I'd expect the aim would be to avoid relegation and take things as they come, if we were to go on a run and get near a top 6 finish then that would obviously be the aim.

However, I believe that if we should go up, first season we should just be looking to settle ourselves into the SPL. Nothing too drastic, although others may disagree.
