Dundee United today secured the signing of Latvian centre half Pavels Mihadjuks on a short term deal until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.

The powerful 29 year old was a free agent when his contract with former club FK Ventspils expired at the end of the year, after previously being with FK Riga. The player also had a spell at Inverness Caledonian Thistle during season 2008/2009 and was keen to return to the UK.

Manager Peter Houston said, "I've been aware of this player and his availability for some time, particularly after he impressed in his short time with Inverness Caley. Pavels is a quality defender with real presence and when it became apparent over the weekend that injuries were going to leave us short defensively, I moved quickly to secure his services until the end of the season. This will not only provide us with immediate and quality cover, but will also allow us, and Pavels, time to see whether this short term deal should be extended beyond then.

Assuming all the necessary clearances come through on time, Pavels will go straight into the squad for Wednesday night's game against Hamilton."

Having 2 fit defenders by the end of the Saints game made getting a defender in a priority. Greg Cameron at right-back and Dillon at left back is the stuff of nightmares, especially as it was Cameron's first appearance in about 2 seasons and he's not even a defender.

Mihadjuks played a few games for ICT and even managed to score against Hearts. Is he a centre-back? Would be great if he was left-footed as we could shift him out to left-back, as that's the main worry.

Edson Braafheid... in the World Cup final!?

I give up. What's the table tennis equivalent of Pie & Bovril?

He's an excellent right-footed centre back.

It must be a mistake. I'm sure I heard he was the final piece of Dundee's jigsaw.

Delighted to have another defender on the books. Is he just a centre-back, or is it possible he could slot into the RB position?

Good news. I think he was highly rated at ICT so he should do a job, especially as we've had injury problems as the back.

Odd. He was all set to sign for Dundee on about 3 different occasions this season.

The English media are always getting the Dundee teams mixed up but for United to do it on this occassion is a farce. Hopefully someone will come out and get this mess sorted out. Does anyone have Mr Melville's number?

No, but plenty of Dees have insiders at Tannadice, they must`ve seen this coming, surely...

I was speaking to a Dundee fan who has an insider at Tannadice and apparently Dundee have let him come to us to try out life in the City of Discovery before they nab him once we go out of business in May Posted Image

I cant say I was overly impressed with him against us....he lacked pace and we won 3 games against ICT with him playing..... but seemed to well against others.....

Im sure he played as a defensive midfielder at times also, ICT will know more than I do tho.....

United very short at the back because of injuries so it is good to get someone in. If he turns out to be a good signing, then if his contract can be extended, he could help us get over the big problem of losing Webster next season.

£20k to pay off a piss-taking agent - the jigsaw looked better without him.

I doubt wee Stephen would've stumped up either so we can only assume the agent got desperate after Dundee told him where to go.

Arabs reckoned he was a cowboy a month or so ago when Dundee were after him. No doubt he is a world beater now.

Butcher obviously thought he was capable of playing at right back: he missed three or four games for us in the run-in last season after we'd got ourselves into a position where we looked like he could stay up and Tokely took over at CB. For the final game of the season, Butcher brought Pavels back in but played him at RB and left Tokely in the middle. Tokely hauled back a Falkirk defender, got himself sent off as last man and the rest is history. Most ICT supporters think that's the decision that cost us survival.

To be fair to Mihadjuks, I don't recall him looking particularly vulnerable at right back, but with good positional sense, presence in the air and enough pace to get back and make saving tackles without climbing all over attackers, he's naturally suited to the centre and would probably be wasted at RB IMO. He also scored a couple of good headed goals for us from corners. Should be a decent signing

That's what I was thinking, although I'm not sure whether you say the d or not. We've just have to wait for Jim Spence to coax it out of him.
