Okay, quick brief.

I have an icon on my desktop and in my start menu called 'yerd'. I could just have a dirty mind but the icon looks suspiciously like a young lady doing a naughty thing B)

Anyways, when I run a scanning programme, one of the things it comes up with is "XXX Porn Dialer". I run Spybot, and it removes the icon from the desktop and start menu but it always reappears when I restart.

Questions:

* Is there a way to remove it for good?

* How likely is it to do damage?

* Can it dial up when I'm connected to the internet using my normal internet connection?

Danke schoen.

Have you been looking at some naughty web sites????

If you go into Tools - Internet Options - Connections there is a box in there with your dial-up connections. Just delete it from there.

When it originally (mysteriously!) appeared i'm not sure if it then becomes your default connection so that every time you dial-up you use the xxx porn connection.

 No, I honestly think its my flatmate.

I'm 99% sure that it's been dialing my usual 0808 number..... here's hoping anyway.

I had that on my old comp - I have broadband so premium rate wasn't an issue. I tried everything to get rid but no joy.

I even bought one of these computer mags with the free software which promised to totally clean my machine. But it was still there!!

Got every kind of spyware, virus protection and pop-up blocker on my new machine with no probs.

If you find where the desktop shortcut is based by right hand clicking on it and go to properties you can find it and del it from there. Or likewise if it is a network connection as someone above said del it from you dial up settings.

It might even turn up in add remove programs and you can take it out from there. Or you might even be lucky and it has an uninstall somewhere, if it apears in your start menu it could have it there.

Once you got rid of it run your virus stuff and something like spybot

I think this is how I got rid of it ...........for a mate

And if you must look at pictures of nubile ladies- and why not, use mozilla Firefox as your browser.
Get it for free here.

Why is Mozilla better than IE for looking at naked ladies?

THe short answer is that Internet explorer(I.E.) is so welded into the windows OS that when using IE and nasty wee programs like dialers can be installed without you knowing. Mozilla Firefox is detached from windows and so when someone tries to drop something into windows it warns you- also has great pop up blockers.

I was actually using Mozilla for a while but a couple of times when browsing my pc just rebooted itself  The second time it happened I had a look into it (with my limited pc knowledge) I can't remember the exact problem but I think it said that it was to do with a driver and it mentioned Mozilla. I just switched back to using IE and the problem hasn't occured again since. I was getting used to using Mozilla and the pop-up blocker was really good.

There was a thing about Dialers on watchdog last night. Is it dial up you have?

It is dial up yeah... we always take the phone line out when we're not on the net so I'm assuming that a dialler can't dial up if you're already using the line

If it's not connected then it can't dial up  There was a bit on the BBC about this yesterday as well and they said that even if you've upgraded to broadband then you should disconnect your dial up cable as some of these rogue diallers can disconnect your braodband and dial up the premium rate ISP :o

Yeah, but my major concern is that when I'm online using my normal dial up that the premium rate dialler could get connected. Possible?

Not if you delete it from your dial-up connections in internet options.

The only one I can see is 'v21' in Internet options so that, hopefully, means its alright.

And I'd also like to point out that the dodgiest site I visit is probably this one. :P

Not the case, it can come back without you knowing. I couldnt get rid of it properly so I ended up blocking premium rate phone calls from my phone (costs around £3 per quarter which is less than the price of an imported hard core mag). I'm not going to pretend I got it from looking at innocent sites though - I got it from looking at porn. Lots and lots of porn
