Are you a supporter of a Junior team and have an internet phone? Could you post team selections, goals, scorers, sending offs, half time and full time results? If so....Read on

There are a few clubs already on twitter you can follow them by clicking the links and then click follow (once you have registered)

Glenafton http://twitter.com/GlenaftonAFC
Auchinleck http://twitter.com/ATFC1909
Cumnock http://twitter.com/CumnockJnrsFC
Thornton Hibs http://twitter.com/ThorntonHibs
Winton Rovers http://twitter.com/wintonrovers
Annbank http://twitter.com/AnnbankUnited
Largs http://twitter.com/Largs_Thistle
Saint Anthonys http://twitter.com/SaintAnthonysFC
Clydebank http://twitter.com/RegalBankie
Kilwinning http://twitter.com/steadythebuffs
Neilston http://twitter.com/NeilstonJuniors
Arthurlie http://twitter.com/ArthurlieFC
Rutherglen http://twitter.com/RuggieGlencairn
Girvan http://twitter.com/Girvanfc
Pollock http://twitter.com/pollok_fc

If you can provide this service for your club, please go to www.twitter.com and register a username for your team. You can then update scores as they happen and provide a service for Junior football.

It would of course be better if you have an official club twitter account rather than a personal one. Worth discussing with your committee.

You can update via an internet phone such as an iPhone or Blackberry or one of the other popular phones or you can register your phone and update via text message.

Please add any new twitter accounts to the list and I apologise if I have missed any existing teams from the list above.

Anyone needing assistance I am happy to help

Happy tweeting

You can add Newtongrange Star on http://twitter.com/nittenstar.

Used it last year but all I need is a volunteer with a thumb to post from the games

I've been tweeting since July - the Mrs has even got Twitter to update on the home page of the Winton Rovers website which I thought was quite good - I have no idea how useful it is for others as it is me who updates it.......but from what I can gather it seems to help!

If you can't attend a game but have access to an internet phone or PC, you can keep in touch with the action without having to phone people to find out what is happening.

If you're at the game but want to know what else is occuring in the leagues or cups, you can get live updates. For instance, I was at Girvan watching the game but knew what was happening at the Cumnock game.

I watch people calling supporters around the grounds to get scores at half time etc. No need if you use twitter. We just need people to get in on the act and for supporters to follow their associated teams and other clubs that interest them.

I am sure there is someone out there who could use the Twitter API to pick up postings from the Twitter sites listed above to create one continuous stream of txt intermixing posts from all sites in real time, but identifying the source. I am sure Pie and Bovril could help by creating an area in the Junior Forum where this can be delivered to. Would give us one place to see all the 'action' as it happens.

Would be useful to local Radio Stations such as Black Diamond to get it as it happens without flicking around the various individual sites, and could be used for improved media coverage elsewhere. (But block big mouth Jim Trainer from accessing it!)

Pretty sure is feasible in the hands of someone who knows their way around this type of stuff.

I see some clubs taking up the idea. Once you account has been created go to www.twitter.com/glenaftonafc and click follow. Then look at Glenafton's followers and follow any that interest you.

For iPhone users you can download various apps to view and update your scores at the games. I can recommend Tweet Deck, Simply Tweet and Twitterific.

I know other Internet phones have apps to do the same but cannot comment on them.

If your phone doesnt support apps, you can use a web browser to view updates from the clubs you are following.

I don't think we really need anyone to do anything new with the API, there are already lots of really good tools out there.

We discussed this sometime last year, my suggestion was that everyone used the hashtag #sjfa so that you could find all the relevant tweets. You could even create a live videprinter on www.twitterfall.com or using one of the many aggregators out there to put it on your own website (here's an aggregator in use on a community action blog I run with some other commuters just for an idea: http://kickedoffatbusby.org/)

With the advent of lists on Twitter you don't even need to do that. I've got a few lists on the Girvan FC Twitter feed where I group Scottish Football clubs (http://twitter.com/G...cottishfootball ), Junior clubs (http://twitter.com/G...nfc/juniorteams ) and SPL/SFL clubs (http://twitter.com/Girvanfc/splandsfl ) and then just follow that list on my phone on a game day. Every Wednesday I do a search round twitter looking for new clubs to add to the lists - looks like i've got a couple to add tonight!

Sorry if that seems like shameless advertising, just don't want anyone trying to reinvent the wheel!

The problem with #sjfa (assuming Twitter has indexed) it is you get everyones comments and it becomes a forum. There are already many wonderful forums on the go so no need to go down that route.

I like the "Lists" idea as it keeps it simple and provides only the data that the fans would be interested in. One drawback is that you would be following teams that you may have no interest in.

Using a simple twitter app on an internet ready phone allows the supporter to follow their chosen clubs of interest and unfollow as suits. This is still my favourite option but relies heavily (like all the other options) of having people at games willing to submit the data as it happens. That is the goal.
Of course many fans of our game are elderly and either have no interest in technology or are just baffled by it so......we will be relying on the younger fans to provide the service I reckon.

Maybe this forum could do us a huge favour and place and advert asking supporters to start an official twitter account and maintain it?

I have also added a Twitter applet to the home page of the Thonton Hibs website http://www.thornton-hibs.co.uk (undeneath the league table) so even if you dont use Twitter you will see updates as they are added.

I hope people find this useful too.

You only get everybody's comments if they add the #sjfa hash tag to their replies or idle chit chat, so I'm not sure that's an issue. I do concede that it means less control for the end user though. I use hashtags in my work pretty regularly, and indexing is not an issue.

Every user on Twitter can create their own lists, that's what I was getting at. Most folk who use Twitter won't just use it for football scores, even if that is their intention at the start. Then as you say, people can follow/unfollow, remove from lists, add to lists as they see fit.

Having an internet enabled phone is obviously the best way if people are at the game and want to know what's happening in other games, but there's no real need to use apps either. The new mobile stylesheet for Twitter makes all but the most sophisticated apps redundant, although it's not quite working with lists at the moment, which is a wee bit irritating!

I agree we need a rallying point - this seems like the logical place to start. You're also right that the more tech savvy should take the lead. It would be great if we could have half time/full time score announcements at games - that's something else I'd like to see.

Great stuff, this is the sort of joint working we need. If we had an objective of all junior teams able to get hold of half time and full time scores so they can announce them at their own games, that would be step forward.

All we need now is someone with the ability to say how it should work, where held, and how we make postings. I don't care how we do it, as long as it is done, and we obviously have the knowledge here to make it happen.

I am sure if we make this work, we can add the bells and whistles later.

I am willing to put the time in and I still believe twitter is the answer. Even without an internet phone, people can update twitter accounts with a simple text message. If the club announcers have a suitable phone or PC, they can obtain the scores and announce them at half time and full time.

The toughest part of this is getting clubs on board with an "official" twitter account that will only post scores and club updates of interests to the fans and of course someone to post these updates from the games.

Maybe we could get the SJFA on board and run an official SJFA live scores Twitter with official club reps providing the updates? Again I would be delighted to run with this.

Thanks Papa, sounds a good offer to me.

You obviously know you way around the Twitter world, so would be useful to have a rough spec. Something that shows what people would have to do to provide updates (or tweets), what the site would look like, and then how people would be able to access it. If we did that we cover the inputs and outputs, and then over to you for the process bits to be done. If we published that process here on this forum everyone can have an input who is interested. We could then go to a trial stage of a few people and then open it up.

Yes the SJFA should be keen to help this, but suspect they would think it was something top do with birdwatching. Easier to give them a working model, and then encourage other clubs to participate. Lay it on a plate for SJFA and if they say no, still do it!!!!

I think it is easier to do this in stages so as not to complicate what is a very simple matter.

Twitter Account Set up:-

Each club should nominate a suitable committee member or reliable supporter to manage their Twitter Account and Tweets. Once you have a desired person in place do the following:-

1. In a web browser go to www.twitter.com

2. Click the ‘SIGN UP NOW’ button

3. Enter your clubs name for instance ‘Pie Shop United’

4. Enter a username (possible a shortened version of your club name) using the above as an example PieshopUTD

5. Set a password

6. Enter the email address of the club. This will be used to inform you of new followers etc

7. Type the words as instructed

8. Finally ‘click create my account’

9. You will receive an email notification – follow any instructions give to activate the account

The above will create your club or indeed a personal account. The process takes two minutes of your time

Once your account is active, login to www.twitter.com using the credentials, locate the setting option at the top of the page and fill in any details you wish to make available such as the clubs web site, location etc.

Ensure you untick ‘protect my tweets’ and save your settings.

That is your account set up.

More to follow........................

I have given instructions using my own twitter page for the Glens, you can repeat for any other user or club.

How To Follow A Club:-

1. In a web browser visit https://twitter.com/GlenaftonAFC and https://twitter.com/thejuniors

2. You wil see a button entitled 'Follow' with a man and a + sign

3. Now when Glenafton make an update, it will be available to you via your twitter page which will be www.twitter.com/yourusername (change name accordingly)

To add more teams:-

  • Return to https://twitter.com/GlenaftonAFC
  • Click the following option on the right
  • When the list appears, click the first button to the left of the club (looks like a man with a + sign next to it) to follow that club
  • Now when the club makes an update, it will appear on your Twitter page as above
You can repeat this process by visiting any club and simply follow them.

More to come.....

To Update Your Clubs Twitter Via a Web Browser (called a Tweet)

  • On your home page twitter page you will see a dialogue box with the name 'What's Happening' Click into the box with your mouse
  • Using no more than 140 characters enter your message. For example "Pie Shop Utd go live on Twitter. All match updates and official news will be posted here"
  • Click the update button
  • Any club or user that has chosen to follow your club will now see your messages
Mobile Updates to Produce Live Scores From Matches:-

You will need an internet ready mobile phone for this and there are a few options on how you achieve it.

Option One:

  • Use your phones internet browser and go to www.twitter.com and sign in using your credentials
  • You will be redirected to Twitters mobile client which is basic but does the job
  • On the top of the page is 'What's Happening'. Simply enter your team news or score as it happens. Examples below
  • You will also see other scores etc on the same interface
  • It is that simple:)
Examples of Match Updates:-

Team News Glens: Semple, Connolly, Merrilees, Quinn etc

GOAL! Glenafton 1 Pie Shop Utd 0 (Shankland 8 mins)

Half Time Glenafton 1 - 0 Pie Shop Utd

Yellow Card - No 4 Pie Shop Utd

Full Time Glenafton 1 - 0 Pie Shop Utd

There should be no personal comments regarding sendings off or off sides etc - That is for the forums and match reports on web sites. All we are interested in is official statements regarding the matches.

What Will The Supporters See?

Lets assume I am following all clubs so on my phone or PC I may see something like this when logged into Twitter

  • ArthurlieFC - GOAL Smith in 18 mins. Arthurlie 1 - Dalry 0
  • Auchinleck - Goal James in 19 mins. Irvine Vics 0 - Talbot 1
  • Rutherglen - RED CARD for Kello Rovers Goalkeeper professional foul
This would continue until the end of all matches.

More to follow....

Option Two For Match Updates:-

Although the Twitter mobile web client is ample as explained in previous posting, I prefer to use an app from Apple on my iPhone.

I use three different ones for different accounts. Tweet Deck, Simple Tweet and Twitterific. Some of these are free to download others may have a small charge ranging from £0.59 to £4.99. Read the reviews and decide if its for you.

Other phones that use Windows Mobile as the operating system also have similar apps.

It would take up too much space to give instructions for each app but although there are many options in the apps, the update process is the same as in option one.

If you are computer and mobile phone literate, I would choose an app. If however you are not as confident then use the twitter mobile web page. If you can type and spell you can do it.

Option Three:-

On your twitter page under settings, there is a mobile option. You register your phone following the instructions which will let you update twitter using a text message. This option is hand if you do not have an internet connection via 3G etc. I use this as a last resort.

Some clubs have Wireless Internet in their offices which if opened up to the public on match days would make Tweeting the match updates easier and faster. Not that its particularly slow on 3G but more speed is always welcome.

The above instructions are all that is required to get off the live updates off the ground assuming the clubs have someone at each game to carry out the updates. It may be useful to have two people versed in the process in the event that one cannot attend a match.

The next step would be to have a web page with a vidi-printer collecting all the updates and displaying them on one common web site. Maybe Youngo from Girvan could assist me with that?

I have free hosting space using ASP .NET or Coldfusion with SQL, mySQL and Access database options. It has 2GB of space and lots of bandwidth so its ideal for this purpose. Youngo - are you interested?

Any assistance required for any of the above steps, just ask - always happy to assist

One thing to mention about following and followers. You will be notified when someone new is following you. This can be another club or a supporter or Joe Bloggs just being nosey. There is no need to follow these people unless you want a load of rubbish on your screen. Just follow other clubs - If everyone follows these guidelines they should only see club(s) updates.

Feel free to add tips and tricks if you know how. I have given the basics.

You may wish to try and have a background for your club with official logos or an avatar with your clubs crest. This is achieved under settings and design and settings and picture respectively.

Other bits of Useful info:-

RETWEET or RT This will retweet or resend another clubs message. Often useful if a game is called off for instance. You may need to shorten the RT due to the 140 character limitation

Direct Message or DM This will send a message directly to the recipient. These are private messages

@ username Sends a message to a follower but is not private

Favourites You can add tweets to your favourites for easy location later

Lists Youngo explained Lists earlier in the thread. If you followed the Girvan list and it is up to date you should see a collection of all clubs messages. This is handy if you dont have time to search and add clubs as they come on board.

Non Match Days:-

Whilst Twitter could be a great asset on match days it can also be used to let supporters and clubs know about various events such as fund raising or players transfer listed or new signings or announcing Committee Meetings and so on. I believe if we keep the club Twitter accounts on a professional basis it will be a bonus for supporters and officials alike.

Please remember this should not be a forum. We dont want to see personal views or complaints about a referees performance. Twitter is not the place for such comments.

One final note - If a follower is giving you grief or abuse - you do have the ability to block the user. You have control of this.
