edit - what's the difference between contador and valverde? valverde got a two year ban from the end of his case yet alberto is respectively banned for races he took part in and compromised the integrity of. this is as close to a whitewash as cas could manage.

just in the tour for example i'm sure if contador wasn't there the schlecks would have attacked earlier and we may have seen a different outcome on the alpe d'huez if andy didn't match contador's early attack

What a complete balls up the CAS has made of this one. To ban him retrospectively & expunge his results just looks like a complete fudge. Surely if they think he was that guilty it would have been a 2 year ban from today?

In doing so it annuls his victory at last years Giro, giving it to Scarponi, a self confessed doper!

This witch hunt seems to be taking a more sinister twist & Contador may well be the minor target of an attempt to get at Riis, a self confessed doper, & his team.

You could put money on him returning in time to shoe it to the rest in this years Vuelta.

it's mental to just say they are retrospectively banning him. he's the biggest threat in the peloton his presence effects everyone's tactics.

the omerta has been out in force today. ridiculous comments from mcquaid, merxck, andy schleck, perrerio, delgado and induarian. it'll be interesting to see what cavendish, millar and wiggins have to say about this.

Cancellara weighing in as well. It`s really not fair on AC. Unbelievable stuff really. Sure it really should`ve been dealt with a lot quicker, but the guy is a cheat. Wouldn`t it b nice to hear a few riders saying AC got what he deserved or even that the punishment it too lenient.

why are you sticking up for a confirmed drug cheat? this will be the 3rd tour that contador will have to miss due to drug allegations (4th if you are as mentally dexterous as the cas judges and scrub him from the last edition)

what does it matter how much clen was found? it's a prohibitied substance, it shouldn't be in his system. do you honestly believe contador rides clean?

CAS case on Jan Ullrich set to be handed down in a week of big doping cases. Just a shame that for whatever reason US Postal & Armstrong have not been nailed.

Like it or not, this could be a familiar scene in 2012, Cav winning in the Rainbow Jersey out in Qatar.

Kiddy - I think you make a very valid point. That detail about one lab being more accurate than the others is very significant. As you say that should now be the standard for every rider rather than the exception.

The main problem of testing for EPO and it's newer forms still exists though. A system that allows riders to dope to a certain limit but only get caught if they go over that limit isn't fit for purpose.

i've have had a read of parts of the judgement and it's clear that the bio passport is out the window. the best bit is where contador asserts that throughout his career he has been surrounded by riders, coaches, directors and doctors who abhor doping .

wada were certain that contador was manipulating his blood values for years and had a fair amount of evidence to back it up as well as the presence of plasticiziers in his blood. there was no one defining piece of evidence but together it all adds but the judges weren't willing to accept anything with even the slightest doubt attatched to it. that pretty much makes the passport useless and considering the cost of running the program it will no doubt be scaled back or binned.

there were rumours it was done before the vuelta and we all saw what happened there. i expect to see plenty more cobo and froome style heroics in 2012 and i'm putting in an early prediction that johan bruynell will turn the schlecks into world class time trialists by the time the tour comes round.

He did hold his hands up though, he's never denied the +ve test. His arguement was that the amount was so minutely small that it would have zero effect on the body & the the only reason behind it, was ingestion through something eaten. His tests from the days either side of it, & all others, were clear.

On the issue of plasticisers, considering the daily exertions of these athletes, you're not trying to tell me that glucose/saline drips aren't regularly used are you?

At the same time, just bear in mind Graeme Obree's comments about signing up for a medical programme being a condition of joining a Pro team.

I'm still waiting on the results of Frandy's samples going through the same German lab.

Anyone who thinks that the CAS is also even handed in the way it's been dealing with things ought to google César Cielo Filho (the Worlds fastest swimmer) & read the report into his case.

Jan Ullrich given two-year ban from CAS

Retired German Tour de France winner suspended

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has issued a two-year ban for Jan Ullrich, to run from August 22, 2011. In addition, all his results from May 2005 until his retirement in February 2007 are annulled.
The CAS partially upheld the UCI's appeal of the Swiss Olympic decision to dismiss its doping investigation into Ullrich after his retirement, and ruled that he was guilty of a doping offence.
“Given the volume, consistency and probative value of the evidence presented by the UCI, and the failure of Jan Ullrich to raise any doubt about the veracity of reliability of such evidence, this Panel came to the conclusion that Jan Ullrich engaged at least in blood doping in violation of Article 15.2 of the UCI Anti-Doping rules,” the court said.

Ullrich was involved in the blood doping scheme of Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes which was uncovered in Operacion Puerto in 2006. He was suspended by T-Mobile Team shortly before the start of the Tour de France that year and subsequently released. He announced his retirement in February 2007 and that same year it was announced that a DNA test matched his blood to samples taken into custody in Operacion Puerto.

Swiss Olympic conducted an investigation but closed it in 2009, saying it had no jurisdiction over Ullrich, a German living in Switzerland and thus riding with a Swiss licence, since he had retired. The UCI appealed that decision to the CAS.

The panel ruled “that it was possible, under the UCI rules, to initiate disciplinary proceedings agasint Jan Ullrich even if the athlete was no longer a licence-holder.”

The panel noted the UCI's evidence that Fuentes provided doping services to athletes, and that Ullrich visited him on “multiple occasions”. Further, Ullrich paid Fuentes more than 80,000 Euros for services that have not been particularized,” and, of course, the DNA tests which “confirmed that Jan Ullrich's genetic profile matched blood bags ready for use in doping purposes found in the possession of Dr. Fuentes.

“The Panel also expressed its surprise that Jan Ullrich did not question the veracity of the evidence or any other substantive aspect of the case, limiting his defence to procedural issues.”
The CAS rejected the UCI's request for a lifetime ban for Ullrich, who was previously suspended in 2002 for amphetamines. The out-of-competition use of amphetamines is no longer a violation and so the panel “refused to consider Jan Ullrich guilty of a second doping offence.”

The two-year ban was given the starting date of August 22, 2011, the date of the CAS hearing. All of this results as of May 1, 2005, are disqualified, “as it is established that Jan Ullrich was fully engaged with Dr. Fuentes' doping programe at least from that date.”

Ullrich gets two year ban commencing August 22nd 2011, and all results annulled from May 05 to Feb 07. Just what is the point? Banning a rider who is already retired, and scrapping his results over a period where he achieved virtually nothing. For his own part Ullrich has always hinted at what goes on in the sport, but without wanting to reveal too much.
Another guy who couldn`t touch the ever-clean Armstrong in competition. The American, and his apologists such as Liggett, may continue to fool much of the non-cycling world, but anybody with an ounce of sense knows better.
