I noticed this was an option on the quick launch menu, so thought I'd see what this would do.

It took up 6.6Gb, but when I went to test the game I took out the disc but it wouldn't run without it... what is the point of this??

I think its if the disk becomes damaged, its a little more readable than if it wasn't saved to your hard drive. Well thats what I've been told anyway..

Basically the game runs off your hard-disk, and only uses the original disc as a "key" for copy-protection.

The main advantage is that loading times are slightly reduced.

It also minimises use of the disc drive which cuts down on the noise and also prevents wear.

If you buy a scratched pre-owned disc you can install it to make sure it works ok. Likewise, it doesn't matter so much if a disc becomes damaged if you already have it installed.

It also allows you to play multi-disc games (such as Forza 3) without having to swap discs.

Would be a lot better if you didn't have to insert the original disc (even if it only asked you to do so occasionally it would be an improvement), but copy protection took priority it seems.
Howdy, you. You want play Blood (laugh) (laugh)? Blood great, you small (sob). I take you see Hydra Galaxy, give impossible information? Make big reproduction. You know what I say (laugh) (laugh). Teleport great ship, we go (friend) (friend).

Not entirely true. If you install Disc's 1 and 2 of Lost Odyssey, you still have to change disc when you finish disc 1.
Any opinions are not necessarily my own but those of the BBC.

I done this with Fifa 09. My disc kept coming up unreadable so I went and bought a new disc at Tesco for the original price which was about £40. I then downloaded the new disc onto my hard drive and then after that I sent back the disc I just bought saying I bought the wrong game at the time. I then used the fucked disc when I ever wanted to play Fifa and it worked perfectly.

Same with Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Might work for some games though.

I have the 360 Elite and the games I play often I keep on the hard drive to reduce loading times.

Currently got the following on the hard drive.

FIFA 10
PES 2010
Modern Warfare 2
Forza 3
Burnout Revenge
Burnout Paradise
Gotham 4
Grand Theft Auto 4
NHL 2K9

I tend to install pre-owned games when I get them to check the discs are okay then delete once it's finished.

Not totally true as if you install disc 2 from the dashboard it dosen't work as you have to install disc 2 from within the game as it has additional content (they are like market place files) unlike a true two disc game which would require inserting the the disc when the 360 tried to access files that would be on the second disc if you have them both installed.

Hopefully that makes sense :P

Yeah, I was going to buy a load of games, install them and take them back to the shop but this stopped me.

I've got two 360's and one 120gb hard drive so thought I could get away with swapping the hard drive over into whatever machine I am using at the time but it will only let you play games installed on the hard drive that were installed on that particular machine

It's fairly stupid as you still need the disc anyway and as I'm logged in as me so surely it should allow me to play games I've installed on my hard drive on one of my machines!!!

f**k off Microsoft <_<

There is no reason for the installs to be locked to a particular machine since you still need the disc to run the game

It also reduces the noise the console makes while playing a game. Play witha game installed for a few weeeks, then go and play one which you hyavn't installed and your ears will be ringing.

Yep playing games on the arcade is a pain in the ass (longer loading times as well) <_<
