BBC news

Apparently several Human Rights groups have carried out research into several video games and have discovered that players can commit war crimes in them. They have urged the makers of such games to remind players that their actions "have real world limits".

Just a few other snippets of this magic survey:

Quote

The games were analysed to see "whether certain scenes and acts committed by players would constitute violations of international law if they were real, rather than virtual".

Quote

The group chose games, rather than films, because of their interactivity.

"Thus," said the report, "the line between the virtual and real experience becomes blurred and the game becomes a simulation of real life situations on the battlefield."

And they worry about the mental state of folk who play the games.

I cannot understand all this so called fury, there has been far worse in the movies for years, and games are now get aged ranked.

If you want blame anybody it is the parents who give in to little Johnny and buy him Grand Theft,i have seen it.

To many MP,s with to much time on there hands trying to get the Daily Mail vote,Keith Vass is the worse.

I'm developing a new game called Auschwitz Sims in which you play the part of a camp guard and work your way up to commandant.

I must admit, ever since I played the Airport mission in Modern Warfare 2 I have been searching for an arms dealer in order to arm myself to the teeth and head into EK town centre to replicate it.

Aside from the fact doing that in EK would probably do society a favour in eliminating the next generation of convicts, these human rights groups need to get a grip. They are games. People who play them know they are games. Every sane person in the world knows that you cannot do what you do in games like Call of Duty in real life.

And I just seen that the article says CoD 5 was reviewed. They really think that people who play that want to go back 60 years to WWII and fight in the trenches?

I have recently taken it upon myself to befriend and then start working for my local gay nightclub owner. Due to this privileged position I was then dancing with this stunning bird in one of his clubs who then refused to f**k me in the toilets. I am suing Rockstar for $50m as I thought that if I could do it in GTA then I could do it in real life too.

Yes, I was shocked at the scenes of violence in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2...I must have mistaken it for Modern Negotiation...

Frankly, any child who takes that shit seriously is too far gone to save anyway. So far my son has steadfastly refused to torture cats or other children. I'm disappointed. :(
ECR leader Jan Zahradil has attacked the decision to go ahead with the House of History project. Speaking in Strasbourg, the Czech member said, "We do not need this. As Europe is losing competitiveness and geopolitical weight, it is becoming a museum anyway."

I want in on this. I'll meet you outside Huddies, grab a quick Victors cos we'll need some energy. Start off at Downtown, then work our way through the scaffy end of the centre, through Princes Mall, the Plaza, then into Centre West via Fuzion/Crystals/Smokey Joes.

I've recently been arrested for removing a guy's small intestine with a pair of tweezers. It was that horrificly realistic Operation game that told me to do it. I'm planning to sue too.
Edson Braafheid... in the World Cup final!?

I give up. What's the table tennis equivalent of Pie & Bovril?

one of my mates in work was reading a rangers fansite FollowFollow and there was a big thread about some guy whose son wants the new call of duty game for xmas and he's considering buying him "to kill a mockingbird" instead, the guy, unsurprisingly for a rangers fan, hadnt read this and was wanting to know the story and why it would be a better alternative.

I was wondering whats more difficut to explain to a 8 year old boy - Institutional Racism and Rape...or just war.. i'd go for war everytime.

I don't know if such a game exists, but I'd love there to be a game for both World Wars where you start out as a private in the trenches/D-Day and fight your way up the ranks, having to determine strategy when you are promoted to sergeant and ultimately to officer rank etc. It would be awesome if you could choose which forces to join at the outset too (e.g. participating in different battles like the Battle of Britain or the sinking of the Bismarck).

I don't worry about these havering nutcases. If they knew how much the games industry was worth and how many jobs rely on it in their constituencies they'd soon shut the f**k up.

To be fair I'd have a pretty dim view of war game stoo if I'd just been forced to play through Hour of Victory.

A Labour MP Tom Watson actually shot down (metaphorically speaking, he hadn't been playing games and gone mental, unfortunately) Keith Vaz over the uninformed nonsense he was spouting in pariliament the other week. Tom Watson is former minister for "digital engagement" and has formed a Facebook group called Gamer's Voice to counter this sort of nonsense.

Quite. If these games ARE too realistic, maybe that's what they are scared of. A bunch of vaguely informed teenagers saying"f**k that for a game of soldiers" when told to go to war....

We only have to put up with this until a new medium is invented, and then it will be demonised for corrupting children...of course conveniently ignoring the fact that violence has been happening since caveman times...damn those violent cave paintings.

First it was books, then it was music, then it was films, now it is computer games. You need a full generation to grow old with the "technology" before you'll completely irradicate the howling of the older generations who don't understand the technology and want to blame society's failings on one specific thing. They will invariably mention that things were never as bad as "this" when they were younger.

Of course, because the older generation have grown up with books, vivid descriptions of brutality, racism, violence, torture, rape, war crimes etc in literature is fine because they understand literature is fiction.

Also, some people say that reading books is healthier than playing computer games or watching TV.

In all cases you are sat on your arse getting no health benefit what so ever. Unless you're watching porn, with the curtains closed and the missis oot daeing the shopping.

Physical health no, mental health yes. Just because something doesn't mean you're exercising physically doesn't mean it's not healthy.

Er no, quite the opposite - chap above seemed to suggest that just because someone's sitting on their arse it couldn't be healthy, and I pointed out that there are other forms of health than just physical exercise.
