I thought I would try and set up online, so when I am bored I could play FIFA. Considering how easy it was to set my Wii up to play online I thought the PS3 would be as simple. How wrong was I?

I have a netgear router DG834G. It uses WPA-PSK encryption security.

Everytime I try and connect I get the following error message:

"A connection to the access point could not be established.
Check the security settings for the wireless LAN.
(8013013E)"

So I google this error code and think I have found a solution. I setup a DMZ (a demilaritised zone). First of all I didn't know what one fucking was. I didn't know I could hack my Router. So everyday is a school day. So I think I have this sussed. I remove all devices. Reset the router and fire back my PS3. Thinking everything will work now.

"A connection to the access point could not be established.
Check the security settings for the wireless LAN.
(8013013E)"

I then go back to my original google search. I find that the PS3's don't like that type of encryption. So I change it to a WEP. This doesn't work either. My shitty Wii connected by inputting two numbers and the PS3 goes through all this rubbish. I have tried everything that was recommended to me.

Has anyone had this much trouble? Or am I just retarded? Is Jimmy Saville dead or do I still have time to write to him? Any help will be much appreciated, even if it is from that Caley mink Jay.

I'll move this to the relevent forum...

Anyway, I've not actually tried to connect a PS3 to a wifi network before. In theory, all networking should be exactly the same or we wouldn't have any networks.

So... Presumably the PS3 has some sort of network scanner that will pick up all the networks in the area, select one, put in the relelvant password and presto, you should be connected. Is there any way you can check if your using DHCP and if DHCP is configured on the router?

I had this problem 2 weeks ago. I didn't realise that my new router was running on WPA rather than WEP, so I was putting the key into the wrong box.

It is a problem with my router. The Sony guy wasn't much help. All he did was google solutions, which I did myself. I need the latest firmware for it to work. Or this is the latest theory. But as it is a branded router it is locked. So I have to flash it to get rid of the locked nature. (Much like a mobile phone being locked to a network). Once this is done, theroretically I can then install the new firmware and it should work.

Currently downloading this magical program at 578 bits a second. Hmm Sky broadband now seems a good idea.

Seems that the Post Office have locked the firmware on this router so in fact you can not update the Firmware at all. Netgear released a fix for this problem a few versions ago. It seems Sky branded netgear routers also have this same problem.

My fix is to use the old router which isn't locked.

To answer your question Jay, I don't know what you are talking about when you say DHCP. Is that a new brand of sauce?

DHCP is automatic IP addressing. Reason I was asking is if your PS3 was trying to pick up an address automatically, but your router didn't have DHCP enabled, it wouldn't be able to get an IP address - hence the access point would be unreachable.

Sounds like you've got the answer now though. It is for this reason that I never ever use the router provided by an ISP.
