This was months ago was it not? I assumed that was all dead and buried.

Two professional snooker players have been detained by police over alleged irregular betting patterns.
Stephen Maguire, 28 and 33-year-old Jamie Burnett, both from Glasgow, are said to be assisting Strathclyde Police with their inquiries.
The allegations relate to a match between the two players at the Maplin UK Championship on 14 December 2008.
Police said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal's office when inquiries were complete.

Milners, there was a thread on the betfair forum (which you know well!) around the time of the match with the allegations about the fixing.
What I found amazing was that the thread was started a couple of days before the game took place!. I've not been on that forum for a while but it could still be floating around.
The phrase bang to rights comes to mind.

On the Scottish news they reported that 12 different bookie around Glasgow took large bets on the correct scoreline of 9-3 but not one bet on 9-4 or 9-2. Very suspicious indeed. If they are found guilty this is a scandal and neither should ever play snooker again(or get paid to at least) and fined a very large amount. I dislike both of the players involved anyway so i would quite like to see them go. Maguire is a huge talent though.

The black that Burnett missed to make it 8-4 was comical. It was the sort of ball most players would pot with their eyes shut.
He didn't even manage to get it in the jaws.

The whole story is very strange. It does not look like the work of criminal masterminds does it. No bets of 9-4 or 9-2... hmmm
Before the match started, the favourite scoreline at the bookies, was 9-3 Maguire. He is considered 3 times better han Burnett. I reckon some one started a rumour up at his local club that it was a set up and told his mates, they opened accounts and told their mates etc.
Something similar would be for me to say to everyone here, open up accounts at William Hill today. Place a bet on Elgin City to beat Annan 2-1. If that comes in would there be a massive investigation??
If Maguire had won 9-4 or 9-2 then noone would have mentioned anything, I think both players are totally innocent.
As for Burnetts missed black - do you really think he would have got a break of 57 in the frame and then miss the pressure black??? Surely he would have rattled the jaws of a red earlier in the frame...
Doesnt add up at all.

I thought snooker was one of those "sports" that every match was fixed before the start, like wrestling and darts.

As do I.
Had it been two journeymen pros, then there may have been a question mark, but there's no way a player in the world's top 5 with the talent he has, would risk his entire liveliehood on a fixed result of one match. And by all accounts, Maguire is one of the more honest pros in the game.
I agree, it just doesn't add up.

I just can't for the life of me see how someone could have missed that black so badly. I'm not sure if Maguire had anything to do with it, but Burnett most certainly did. He probably would have missed that black over and over again if he had to.

People do miss easy shots. O'Sullivan missed a few blacks off their spots during the recent world championship, and you'd think that would be impossible for a man of his talents, but it happens.
For a match fixing to work, both players generally need to be in on it, unless the one person involved is good enough to ensure a certain score happens.
What may have happened is that Burnett had a big wedge on him losing 9-3, and when it came to that black, he may have missed it deliberately, knowing he was out anyway. I really don't think it was any more nefarious than that.

Inches away from hitting the jaws though and not playing for position ? I've watched snooker for a while and have never, and probably will never, seen a miss like that.

Stephen Maguire is good enough to clean up. All Burnett would have to do is make sure he didn't win too many frames. He did that.

Oh come on, it was not that bad. It was a blind cut. Granted he should have got that 99 out of 100 times but it was not as bad as you are making out.

Yes it was. If it rattled the jaws I might have been a bit more kind, but he couldn't even do that. It's the worst snooker shot I have ever seen and the worst I will ever see. I can't believe people are actually sticking up for it.
