I tried to do a mate of my brothers, but as soon as I went to start the mii installer the screen went blank and didnt do anything. I tired using the SD card from mine but that did the same. The console was already updated to 4.1, but I updated it to 4.2 and now it doesnt work at all.
Is there a way to take it back to 4.1? Im not sure if this has already been modded, I will need to ask.
Thanks in advance.

Thats your problem, Im afraid. 4.2 plugs a lot of the holes used by the homebrew. You can still mod a 4.2 console, but you have to follow different instructions.
Also, apparently, there have been issues with people upgrading non-modded Wiis to 4.2. The upgrade process itself has been bricking machines, but then, obviously, Nintendo have been replacing those.
I think I did see some instructions on going from 4.2 to 4.1, I'll have a look and post them later, if I find them.
edited to add - I found the link here. Its mainly about modding a 4.2 wii, but there is sections on manually updating from 4.1 to 4.2 (to avoid the bricking issues I mentioned above) and going from 4.2 back to 4.1
Im not taking any responsibility for this link! GBAtemp is a well respected forum in terms of modding etc, but Ive never used any of the instructions on this link.

Thanx M8. Just the info I need.
Do you recommend going back to 4.1 then manually updating it to 4.2 again, then modding it?
I found out today the console hasnt been modded before, so if I get it back to 4.1, I fear Im still going to have problems as it doesnt run the hackmii installer. Any ideas?

If it hadnt been modded before and its bricked because you ran the "official" update to 4.2, I would get in touch with Nintendo and see what they say.
Im not sure Im really qualified to give much advice on this one! As I said, I havent gone near 4.2, only read a few bits and pieces about it. If I was in your position, I would probably try what you suggest though.

Ok tried to downgrade to 4.1, but cant do it because the Homebrew channel isnt installed.
When I select the SD card it doesnt give me an option to install the elf file either. The dialogue box just doenst appear. Although when inserted into my console it does.
Im just stumped as to what to do now...
