I'm sure a GP2 driver did the same thing of sorts. He slowed at Monaco to wave and celebrate to his pit crew- forgetting he hadn't crossed the line- and in the meantime the 2nd place man passed him! Can't remember it and can't find it on youtube- think it was Bruno Senna in 2007?

It was Bjorn Wirdheim in the 2003 F3000 race - link. He dominated the race but slowed too early, although he did go on to take the title.

Another classic was Sean Emmett in 2004 I think, at Thruxton in the BSB. He was just yards from the chequered flag when he took his hand off the bar to celebrate, nearly lost it and was passed by a couple of bikes.

Mansell's last lap failure in Canada, 1991 was pretty amusing too. Williams said it was a gearbox problem but the general consenus was he stalled the engine while waving to the crowd at the hairpin.

Another Keystone Cops moment from the slowing down lap at the recent Misano World Supersport round, featuring Eugene Laverty and Cal Crutchlow  linky
