I've contacted Saints and suggested that our pre-season friendly should be used as a fundraiser for Gordon's family. I'd happily pay more than the standard £5 entry in order to help out his folks a little at this desperately difficult time. £15 seems reasonable, and I reckon if St Mirren fans knew that the cash would go to the family, we'd bring a good number along.

Just by way of an update on this...

I've received a response from the club (St Mirren) and this will be discussed with our General Manager and Gus MacPherson within the next couple of days.

when we signed Gordon Lennon I remember commenting that I thought the season before he had been the best player in the third division to play against us.
I also said he was prone to being a bit unlucky having twice scored own goals against us despite playing well
and hoped he would be luckier for us

earlier this season he had a sticky spell when things went a bit against him but since xams he turned it round and was oustanding in the last 6-8 games.A born leader and class act

thats on the park

off the park-if you didnt know him you might think these comments are flowered up a bit --let me tell you -there not
he introduced me to his family at the elgin game and he was so proud that day to be captain of sons and to show his popularity to his family.
at the dance that night he just ran around talking to every one and we all now-smiling

I am honoured to say I met Gordon Lennon and his family.

Some day I hope his family find the strength to come back and visit us

God Bless Gordon and his family

Why does it always happen to the good guys?

Thoughts are with his family at this awful time. Sad, sad loss. Just can't think of anything else to say.

I think Brandy could have played with him in the juvenile ranks at Harmony Row or maybe clubs before that.

If not as someone else says it shows you the respect that Gordon Lennon had from anyone who crossed his path, whether an opposition player or fan.

Everyone goes on their merry way arguing about the merits of this team, that team, this referee ,that manager,...... and then news such as this comes along and stops us in our tracks.

A tragic, tragic story.

The picture of him in the Sun today holding his wee 5 month old baby shows how sad this is.

RIP Gordon.

Can I just say how touching it has been reading the tributes from supporters of other clubs?

Thank you each and every one.

Been reading through the papers and posts here, seen people refering to Gordon Lennon as "Guido" i think i possibly worked with him in JD sports when i was younger, whether its the same Guido or not my thoughts go out to his family.

I believe it is the same Guido i worked with, lost touch with him when i left but bumped into him in Glasgow from time to time and he would always have a chat, always knew him as Guido and he always had that smile, dont think i ever called him Gordon, heartbreaking and puts other things in perspective. Someone mentioned about making the pre season game with Dumbarton v St Mirren a fund raiser for his family keep us updated as i dont usually go away for pre season games but for this reason i would definetly be there.

I don't usually get affected by the passing of people i don't know and never bother to say RIP in threads because i feel it wouldn't be right if im not actually feeling anything and even when i first read this story i wasn't really affected and wasn't going to post saying RIP etc.

But after reading about him in this thread i started to feel really sad and emotional that he had died, which amazes me as i'd never even heard of him nevermind seen him play. The two things i take from this is that it is such a shame that such an amazing guy has died, and secondly that i really wish i had seen him play now. The photos just make me even sadder.

I think its the mark of the man that he can get me emotional about his passing when i'd never even heard of him, and never feel anything when people i don't know die wether it be anyone in the news, a celebrity or footballer.

I am still in shock at what has happened. I have been going into work in a daze for the last few days. I have not posted anything up until now as sometimes things can be said that is not meant.
However I am still feeling numb...I don't know whether it is because I have a young baby like Guido had, I don't know if its because of his infectious smile every time I seen him play or after games, I don't know if its because of how proud he was to play and win for the team I have supported for almost 25 years, I don;t even know if it was because he is going to leave a big hole in the team next year.
The sad feeling I have just now has only been surpassed by the loss of my own family members/friends...
Some football fans cry when their team get relegated (something which i really dont understand), some cry when they win the league/cup (again never understood this), but I could understand why some may have a tear in their eye about the big fella.
I really hope his family pull through this, and I for one will be at any match that is arranged with any team that will help his family out.

Perhaps not the most massively "sincere" way of sending condolences etc but someone set this Bebo group up in his honour:

Bebo link

Can't begin to think what that poor boy's family are going through now :(
John Sweeney - definitely better than Christian Smith

Saw Gordon play against East Fife a few times and always admired him as a player. I always wished he would sign for us as he was one of the genuine class acts in the lower divisions. He scored a cracking goal against us at Bayview when he finished calmly after breaking from his own half. My thoughts are with his family and friends - can't even imagine what they are going through. Club Statement

Everybody connected with Dumbarton Football Club are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of club captain Gordon Lennon resulting from a tragic accident whilst on a weekend break with his family.

All our thoughts are with his whole family and in particular his partner Kelly and 5 month old baby Kai.

Gordon was an inspiration both on and off the park and his influence will be felt by many both within and out with Dumbarton Football Club for a very long time to come.

He was not just a quality footballer, he was a great man with so many qualities and was rarely seen without his trademark smile.

He always had time to speak with supporters, of any club, and everyone associated with Dumbarton Football Club are proud that he considered his greatest footballing achievement was lifting the Scottish Football League 3rd Division Championship Trophy as the captain of Dumbarton last month.

Our condolences go out to his family and as a Club we will assist his family in whatever way we can through these difficult times and those that lie ahead.

Further information and updates will be issued as appropriate in due course.

A book of condolences is available at Strathclyde Homes Stadium for anyone who wishes to contribute.

Dumbarton FC

That's really touching. Dumbarton seem to be a proper community club, there are more comments on here about how nice a guy he was than how good a player he was. And he was a good player. Condolences to everyone connected with the club, you've lost a top player, a club captain, and more importantly a nice guy.

Knew him since I was about 10 from playing football with him on the pitches at Lourdes Primary and once or twice with him for a team in an alter boys league (really). He was the best player I knew growing up, definitely capable of playing at a higher level. I know quite a few people with far less ability who somehow cut it at a higher level. Although I was pretty amazed that he turned out as a defender- he was always the kind of player who would run rings round everyone else, quick feet with excellent burst of pace.

Sad loss to the game.

Sad loss full stop.
