I was really stunned when I saw this in the paper this morning. I saw him play against Montrose at the start of the season and he just looked a class above, which made me wonder why he never made it at Partick. Would surely have been a standout in the Second too. Sounds like he was a great guy too. Such a tragedy.

Gordon, Gordy, Guido... Been his nickname since School.
I hope a benefit match can be organised as well. I'll definately be there as well... Still can't believe the lad is away from us. From what I remember of Guido at school, without failure, he always had a smile on his face. A really nice lad, absolutely gutted he's away...

This is horrible, horrible news.
I went to a Dumbarton/East Stirling game last season and Lennon looked far too good for the 3rd Division. It sounds like it's the usual thing that is said when someone dies, but he honestly did look a fair whack above everyone on the team along with Stevie Murray.
Such a horrible thing to have happened at such a young age, especially considering he just had a kid as well.

There's talk about a Dumbarton/Thistle match, where would this be held?
I don't know how much the Rock holds, but I think it's safe to say that Thistle could probably cover half, if not all of that stand for this type of match, that's without taking Dumbarton fans, Albion Rovers fans and neutrals into account.
Surely it would have to be Firhill for this type of thing?
I would happily go along to any tribute match and I'm sure a few other people I know would be interested in going.

I think the game was to be held at the SHS as Thistle are working at re-seeding their pitch or something over the summer.

I watched Gordon Lennon play for Albion Rovers a dozen or so times, and he stood out a mile. Always had a word for the supporters when he was passing theough the wee bar post-match too. Tis fair to say that ball playing centre halfs of that nature aren't too common in the SFL.
I was well peeved when he went to Thistle as we were slated to sign him at the time.
Can only echo the comments of others as regards his family.

Ah, so was this already a planned friendly?
If there is to be a proper tribute match do you think SHS would be big enough for it? It does seem like the guy was very popular and well respected, so I would say it isn't silly to think there could be a fairly large crowd.

Yeah the fixture was part of our pre-season plans. You're probably right though, this tragedy will certainly effect more than the 2000 supporters that our ground can hold. I'm sure the club will arrive at some sort of solution.

Heartbreaking news. It is awful when a young guy dies like this, however given that he has such a young family compounds it even more. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
That is a great idea. Perhaps someone involved with the club/fans trust etc could also get something set up and advertised on P&B for donations to be made. I think that there would be a large amount of football fans of all clubs willing to donate a few pounds to as worthwile a cause you will ever come across.
R.I.P Gordon.

I'm sure that the club will do it anyway, but I would like to see some memorial fundraising event(s) for Gordons family who have been left, perhaps a wee tournament involving all of his previous clubs and the players who played with him, with all the proceeds going to his family?

Unfortunately I never got to see Lennon play, which is a real shame because he was highly rated by a lot of people.
Can't really add to what everyone has said, an absolute tragedy. My thoughts are with his family, friends and those at Dumbarton FC.

Heard about this last night and still as shocked. Spoke to with my mate who played with Gordon and he's pretty devastated. Remember watching him excel for Albion Rovers, particularly the Scottish Cup game at Firhill where he was the best player on the pitch by a distance. Even more harrowing as he had just had a wee girl.
The takings from the friendly should definitely go to his family. As uninspiring as our pre-season appears, I would hope the Thistle fans would make the effort to attend this one.

I really can't believe this has happened, it is an absolute tragedy.
It makes it even worse, considering his young family.
I really don't know what to say, I am just so shocked by this. I hope some sort of tribute game is organised.

Club Statement
Everybody connected with Dumbarton Football Club are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of club captain Gordon Lennon resulting from a tragic accident whilst on a weekend break with his family.
All our thoughts are with his whole family and in particular his partner Kelly and 5 month old baby Kai.
Gordon was an inspiration both on and off the park and his influence will be felt by many both within and out with Dumbarton Football Club for a very long time to come.
He was not just a quality footballer, he was a great man with so many qualities and was rarely seen without his trademark smile.
He always had time to speak with supporters, of any club, and everyone associated with Dumbarton Football Club are proud that he considered his greatest footballing achievement was lifting the Scottish Football League 3rd Division Championship Trophy as the captain of Dumbarton last month.
Our condolences go out to his family and as a Club we will assist his family in whatever way we can through these difficult times and those that lie ahead.
Further information and updates will be issued as appropriate in due course.
A book of condolences is available at Strathclyde Homes Stadium for anyone who wishes to contribute.

Still cant belive the big mans gone, wont be the same next season without him and his trademark smile

Those calling for the gate receipts from a game to go to Guido's family should realise that there would be little left in profit for a friendly and even the profit would be subject to tax.
Better for a committee to arrange a testimonial (tax free if done to certain guidelines) or as one fan suggested have a collection at one of the games organised by the fans.
If DFC get involved any money will be subject to tax.

When I looked on the East Fife fans forum this morning and saw a thread called 'Gordon Lennon', I got very excited that we might have signed him and that kind of sums up what myself and every other lower league supporter, it seems, thought of the guys footballing ability. Was a stand out every time I saw him play for Albion Rovers and Stenhousemuir.

Still can't believe it, been thinking about it all day.
I think the last day of the season summed up Guido perfectly. While all his fellow players were dying to get away and enjoy their night up the town he was more than happy to pose for photos and sign autographs for as long as he could. He had the perfect attitude and you couldn't have wished for a better captain in terms of professionalism.
I'm just happy I had the pleasure of speaking to him a number of times over the last couple of seasons. I even remember telling all the lads after last years POTY dance what a nice guy he was. He never let this reputation slip and I think you would seriously struggle to find anyone who had a bad word to say about him.

I've not been able to stop thinking about Gordons death all day.
To my mind, he was our club captain, not because he was our best player but because of his character and personality.
To have seen him at Annan and SHS on the last day of the season was a great insight to the guy. The way that he took the trophy to those disabled fans around the ground for them, signed everything presented to him, had a word, a handshake and his smile for every fan who stopped him spoke volumes.
He'll be missed sorely both in the dressing room and the stands.
I cant imagine what his family must be going through and I hope some sort of tribute can be made to him.

I've only just heard this and just wanted to pass on my sympathies to the Dumbarton fans and his family and friends. I'll be brutally honest I had never heard of him before the awful news broke, but it has still made me sad and a bit numb if I'm honest. A young, healthy guy with a wife and 5 month old child. It's just not...fair, is it? Shocking state of affairs.
