the favourite old games thread got me thinking about vice city for the ps2 addictively playable awesome soundtrack and a nod to just about everything iconic in the eighties including burt reynolds. but san andreas was a let down to big a game area and lacked charm. and now gta 4 a testament to what next gen consoles can do but seen it all before and at the end of the day just wasn't as fun and didn't haveme coming back time and again. what are your views am i talking shite whilst wearing rose tinted specs
Grand Theft Auto has it had its day

IMO GTA3 Liberty City has been the pick of the bunch so far.

Spot on!
It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better. I've been drowning too long to believe that the tide is going to turn. And I've been living too hard to believe things are going to get easier now. I'm still trying to shake off the pain from the lessons I've learned. And if I see Van Helsing, I swear to the lord I will slay him. AHA HA HA. He take you from me but I swear I won't let it be so. AHA HA HA. Blood, will run done his face, when he is decapitated AH! His head on my mantle is how I will let this world know...how much I love you.
Die, die, die....I can't
Die, die, die....I can't

San Andreas was the best one of the 3D era! I admit GTA4 was disappointing but still a good game and GTA Chinatown Wars is quality for what it is. I love it!

I think the OP is talking shite while wearing rose tinted specs.
I still love the games. I'll never get bored of GTA IV (when I'm bored going on killing sprees and being chased by the cops, I'll kill Americans online). But I agree that Vice City was probably the best, and that's mostly down to VRock B)

I dont think R* would be happy just rehashing the same old game like they did for 3, VC and San Andreas. With SA they pushed the power of the PS2 and with 4 it was pushing the next gen console. I just think the problem lies with originality, they have had mafia, 70's drug lords, yakuza, La esque gangs, immigrants. Where do they go now?

I never got into GTA after the second one. I really liked the first GTA! It was good clean fun, in an arcade style, relatively simple to play, and good for a bit of an arcade style blast. After London 1969 though, I got a bit bored of it, and never fancied the various flavours of GTA 3 and 4.

'Vice City' was one of the best games ever made, especially if you were an 80's kid.
San Andreas was good too, but I couldn't relate to it as much, and for all GTA IV looks great, and is highly playable, I played it for a few days and never went back to it.
So yes, I think the franchise needs re-invigorating.

San Andreas is the best of the whole series so far - 2d and 3d - in my opinion.
It was huge, a good amount of missions, was feature rich, had great replay value and it was FUN to play.
Vice City is next best but I wasn't that fond of GTA3 at the time. The original is a fantastic game but the other 2d ones aren't great.
GTA4 is brilliant but has pretty much zero replay value. The whole fun fantasiful (is that a word
) GTA experience isn't really there. I spent months towards the end of my PS2 life just playing San Andreas because it had so much to do and was enjoyable to do so. GTA4 looks fantastic, has a decent story line but it lacks a lot of features. Online play is the dogs bollocks but only with friends, imo, and is the only thing that keeps me coming back to it.
It isn't as fun as the others and I think Rockstar were really just testing how far they could push the 360 at this stage with this game. Hopefully the next one will be similiar to the previous generation games but look as good as 4: now that would be a game and a half.

GTA 4 is my favourite out of the lot - best story with characters you relate to more than any other game, and good fun gameplay. Having said that, vice city's the only game of the 7 that ive not played!

Though i love IV and still play online i've got a soft spot for San Andreas. I loved the way you could drive/walk into other gangs hoods and they attacked you something lacking in IV.

San Andreas is the best one and Vice City is just a close second.

When I got GTA3 for the PC I couldn't believe how good it was, I enjoyed the old birds eye view GTA but when it became a 3d sandbox style game I was amazed and spent months playing it, exploring every area of Liberty City.
Unfortunately I missed out on much of Vice City, though it was by all accounts a brilliant continuation.
San Andeas was definately one of my favourite games ever though, great characters, great story, huge huge map with so many different places.
I was always keeping an eye on where the next GTA would be set, when I heard it was a revamped Liberty (NYC) I must admit I was really disappointed. I had also been playing lots of first person games, so it was quite crap going back to third person.
Admittedly, when I bought GTAIV it looked amazing, was great to drive around an cause havoc, and I had lots of fun of Xboxlive with the free mode, but the main game never really caught my attention, tedious repetative missions, drive here, kill him, pick up him, drive there. Like the OP says, I think its had its day in its current form.
They should look at something totally different for the next one, definately no more mafia, definately no more NYC. I'd like to see it becoming FPS, in the Fallout 3 mode. A San Andreas style map with 2 or 3 cities would be ideal too, based in the UK would be great but it'll probably never happen as the yanks wouldn't buy it.

it got boring for me, so i went on mass murder sprees, got chased by cops which got boring then on gta4 there was a petrol station at the bottom of a hill which i zoomed into with cops behind, my car crashed and went on fire so i jumped out then the cops smashed into one of the pumps which blew up and sent me flying miles away in the air before i smashed into a huge building and plummeted to the ground and inevitably died, which was absolutely hilarious at the time, could never replicate it though so it got boring again

Running over deformed inbreds from Kirkcaldy would be fun.
