I installed service pack 2 from a disk on sunday, now every time I boot the pc up I get a warning saying that programme scv32 (i think that's it) is trying to connect to the internet. Should I allow it or block it?
Windows Xp Service Pack 2
A little bit of advice please

Ok so the program that's trying to connect is not scv32 it's actually called 'Generic Host Process for Win32 services'
Should I allow it?

Not sure exactly what the problem could be attributed to but I guess you could do worse than check out the SP2 Site on Microsoft.com

If you are using AOL there's a specific patch you have to download after you've done this pack thing.
I've sent off to get it on CD, but I'm not altogether happy about doing this upgrade.

I've not updated my computer back in Sneck with SP2 due to all the mess some people are getting into after the installation.

I updated it weeks ago. I havent had any problems since i stopped the firewall running. There was a conflict with my norton internet security.;Thats maybe why folk have not been able to access the net.
Check that its not because youve got two firewalls running.I believ its also got its own pop up stopper and antivirus as well.

I did a bit of research and it seems that it needs acces to the internet. It's not spyware or adware. It wasn't so much a problem as I just wanted to know what it was.
I don't think SP2 does have it's own anti-virus software. The security suite in SP2 just checks that your own anti-virus software is up to date.

I've just installed SP2... no problems so far, apart from things feeling a little sluggish.
But it doesn't seem to recognise Norton, and every time it logs on I get a warning bubble saying my anti-virus status is potentially dangerous.
How did you sort out your conflict?

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click Security Center. On the left hand side, select "Change the way Security Center alerts me". From there you can select which things you want Windows to alert you about, ie. none. As long as you know Norton is working fine you don't need XP telling you it isn't.

It's an 80mb file so if you're on dial-up it takes about 14 hours to download

If you got to the microsoft website you can order a CD which takes a couple of weeks to arrive. It's a handy update, by all accounts, and I've had no problems whatsoever.

I have a 600k connection, so it won't take anywhere near 14 hours.
I'll download it tonight

Absolutely. Apart from SP 2 not recognising Norton, I've had no problems.

I had the same problem with it when i first installed it,that and the pc running a bit slow with it.
I might do it later after i have got a reply about the virus norton found, and my hijack log gets the all clear.
