i'm heading to a party in the next hour or so, but because i was up at 5am this morning for work i went for a power nap and slept past the 10pm sales restriction of alcohol. is there anywhere in glasgow (perhaps 24hr asdas and tescos?) that i can buy booze now?

You need the magic number. I'm not at liberty to disclose said beer-monkey's number, but I'm sure some hardcore googling will reveal it to you.

Any idea what the deal is with that? I've taken advantage a few times, filled with feelings of smugness that I'm buying booze after 10, and confusion about why I'm able to do so.

Our Student Union had an off license attached to it that would serve you until 15 mins after the bar closed.

Write to your local MP. Shocking.

Surely there's at least one 24 hour bar in Glasgow?

Are there many 24 hour bars in Engalnd and Wales?

During the Edinburgh Festival I think you can drink for 24 hours if you plan it correctly. Begin and end in the Penny Black.

In Bristol I knew of one place. It was awful though, packing as many people in as possible and charging rediculous amounts for booze (of course).

How do you think we in Inverclyde feel, the only place in Scotland with a curfew. No new customers allowed into pubs and clubs after 11:30pm

don't come to Inverclyde or we'll chib you, is basically the message.

11:30?! That's shocking! There's a kind of curfew in Elgin - you can't get in after 12:30am and there aren't any places to go for a fag apart from back out the front door. So if you want a fag after 12:30am, you have to leave the place and not get back in. It's a piece of nonsense.

It's terrible. Your night has to start so early because you have to be in the final place you want to go by 11:30pm. Everywhere in Greenock has a smoking area, but it's still annoying when you cant leave to go to the bank or something. It's strange being in Glasgow or something and not going into a club until 1-2am. At least you get your money's worth in terms of hours in the club, but you spend a fortune in drinks aswell.

Why is there a curfew? Violence?

I'm not sure why it was brought in, i presume it was down to violence but there isn't any more violence from drunken people in Inverclyde than anywhere else in Scotland. Maybe there was another reason.

Im pretty sure it was tested on us by the government but then not used anywhere else and we've just kept it.

Seems strange, surely its not a great idea having everyone stuck in the same place buying lots of alcohol because theres nothing else to do?

It's a ridiculous idea - I don't know if this happens in Inverclyde or not, but in Elgin, you get everyone rushing to get into the places that are open latest (i.e. Downtown or Joanna's that are open until 3am) before 12:30am and there are often fights in queues and things. Then it kicks off when the doors shut at 12:30 and the bouncers have to put up with a lot of shit. To be fair though, they're all knobends.

They used to have the same deal in the Falkirk area and it was ditched after a year as it caused more problems than it solved.

I don't know if its a huge problem, but it certainly doesn't solve anything.

There aren't really fights in queues or anything for the two " decent " clubs in Greenock, but when the doors only open at 10:30-11pm and you only have til 11:30pm to get in it leads to queues and everyone in pubs trying to down their drinks quickly or they don't get in. All the curfew does really is promote more binge drinking, which is exactly what it's trying to stop i presume.

Aye, the curfew's counter productive. Just makes people drink much faster in pubs, which they wouldn't have to do if the curfew wasn't so early. Red and Word Up, doors open at 11 and close at 11:30, meaning the pubs next door are filled with people downing as much drink as possible. It's a stupid idea.
