P&B Fives 2009 Report

Our sixth annual fives tournament took place at the Glasgow Powerleague on Saturday with 40 teams battling it out for the coveted title of P&B Fives Champions 2009.

As usual the weather was kind, with the sun catching many by surprise, leaving to one or two red faces in the bar afterwards !

The competition as usual was keenly contested and the standard of football on show was of a very high standard. You can see some youtube highlights from some of the group games which have been kindly posted up by Andy Williams by clicking here.

When the dust had settled after the group stages and subsequent knock out phases it was left to the Airdrie Allstars and AC Mallon to fight it out in the final, and the Airdrie boys emerged victorious in a 3-1 win that saw them land their third P&B title, having also been runners up on two other occasions.

Our first ever prize raffle took place in the bar afterwards, raising £300 which will be split between the Homeless World Cup Foundation and the family of Gordon Lennon, the Dumbarton skipper who tragically lost his life a couple of weeks ago.

We then moved on to Walkabout and the party went on there until late into the night doubtless leading to a few sore heads come Sunday morning.

Another great day out. Thanks to those who attended, particularly those travelling long distances. The fives 2010 event is already in planning and with the world cup taking place next summer it promises to be a football festival to remember.

Usual cracking day and good tournoi as well, Monster Munch will be back next year with a better name!

Shame about Walkabout, bouncers in Glasgow are like pocket Hitlers but if you've no ID and dont look 25+ then you have no chance of getting in to any pub in the city centre, be warned.

Sorry to hear you had problems with Walkabout. You were not alone, and frankly I don't expect us to be back there next year for the after tourmanent party.

Superb day and well done to everyone that was behind the organising of the event, running it and of course Airdrie Allstars for showing us how it is done by winning it. This was the first year that the guys from Firs Park Forever and Shire Pirates had taken part and I think I can speak for everyone when I say we had a great day and will do our utmost to come back again next year.

My one sour note from the day though and something I will be complaining to the bar about was the after party at Walkabout. After the event a few of our lads went to Walkabout after the raffle to show face before jumping on the train back to Falkirk. We were all over 18 but got ID’d and one lad didn’t have any on him and was subsequently knocked back. I tried to explain to the Doormen that we were from the Pie & Bovril Football Tournament and the after party was here and that we were only going to show face and the guy in question was over the age of 18. The Doormen denied all knowledge of any sort of private function going on inside and then refused the 3 with id to go in as “we’d had too much to drink” by this point, which was a total fabrication as well. I won’t be attending Walkabout next year or any other year, but it might be a good idea for future events if organisers of P&B could maybe leave people’s names at the door or something for getting in, or issue passes out at the tournament or something. I know this wasn’t the fault of P&B but it did put a little bit of a dampener on things for us……well until we went to the next bar ha ha.

Anyway, superb day and well done to everyone who was involved in it, see you again next season.

Craig Brown
