Aberdeen Carried The Day

Aberdeen claimed another impressive victory and have extended their unbeaten run to eight games.

Three first half goals secured The Dons a 3-1 victory over Hearts and saw 26 year old striker David Goodwillie net a brace for the away side. Veteran striker Niall McGinn was also on the scoresheet, and provided both the assists for Goodwillie’s goals.

Veteran striker Niall McGinn provided both the assists for Goodwillie’s goals and also found himself on the scoresheet thanks to his goal in the 23rd minute. Goodwillie was yet to score so far this season and the peripheral Scotland international will hope to build on this.

Hearts coach Robbie Neilson stated before the match that the tough fixture against the league leaders was a perfect time for the club to end their recent run of bad results. Hearts had been unbeaten in 5 but slumped to a defeat against Hamilton Academical and subsequently lost to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Aberdeen are now five points clear at the top of the table and are the only team in the Scottish top flight yet to lose a match this season. The Dons, who finished runners up last season are chasing their first Scottish League title since 1985, which was also the last time a team other than Celtic or Rangers won.

The overall record for the most consecutive top flight wins stands at 25, a record set by Celtic in the 2003/04 season when they claimed the Scottish League with an impressive 98 points. Should Aberdeen maintain their impressive run they could chase the longest top flight unbeaten run, which stands at 65 games and was set by Celtic between 1915 and 1917.

Since Rangers crashed into the bottom tier of Scottish football Celtic have reigned supreme and despite this impressive start the odds on Aberdeen to clinch the title remain high. Would you bet on Aberdeen to go the distance, and perhaps top Celtic’s impressive records?
